The Hepolite exhaust cam follower, or tappet, is used in the exhaust guide block where there is a provision for an oil passage. The “R” radius offers a slightly flatter profile for increased valve opening duration and is often paired with the 70-9989 “Q” camshaft with the E3134 profile.
This precision machined exhaust tappet features a hardened surface for increased durability. The “R” designation refers to the 1-1/8″ radius and is often called for when fitting aftermarket performance camshafts in the B-range Triumph engines, although this tappet was also specified for use in the later 750 engines with milder camshafts through 1980. Made in the UK by Hepolite.
Exhaust tappets differ from the inlet tappets in that they have a recess in the stem with an oil hole, to accept oil fed through the guide block. The oil is routed through the stem to the face of the cam follower to help minimize wear to the camshaft and follower. In almost all instances, when new camshafts are being installed, the manufacturer will specify the replacement of tappets showing any wear whatsoever.
The cam follower requires pre-lubrication with engine assembly lube when fitted to the guide block. It is recommended to secure the stem in the guide block with a short section of fuel line or zip tie to prevent the tappet from falling out of the guide block and into the engine cavity when installing the cylinder barrel assembly onto the crankcase. Refer to the factory workshop manual for specific installation procedures.
